Germany indulged in large scale doping

The footballers for West Germany who played against England in the nation’s only successful FIFA World Cup campaign could have been injected with performance enhancing drugs, a recent report has revealed.

A report that has been prepared by researchers in Germany have attributed the government with continuing with a large scale doping scandal that transcended all sports and also percolated to football and this has brought down a huge cloud on the successful Germany World Cup winning team of 1974 under the leadership of Franz Beckenbauer as well.

The reports were leaked by a German publication of a long research into state financed doping in the country. According to the leaked report attributed to the unpublished report, the doping scandal may have kicked off under state aid after the Second World War and such was the insistence of the government to be better than their East German counterparts that they spent millions of dollars to fund the project.

According to the report, an interior minister of the country at that time had stated that the athletes of Germany should have the same conditions as well as services as the East German bloc and this led to a competition with the bitter rivals that led to the doping experiments.

The report also stated that amphetamines were used on a large scale by the soldiers of the country in the Second World War and the footballers in Germany continued the trend starting from the 1950s well into the 1980s.

However, it has also been claimed that the German players could also have administered the drugs on themselves accidentally through the use of a decongestant for colds that was used on a large scale during that time. England defeated the team 4-2 in the final of the 1966 World Cup on home soil.

ONE OF THE FAVOURITES

After coming close to winning a major competition in the last three, Germany will be one of the favourites to lift the 2014 FIFA World Cup when it is held in Brazil in just under 12 months. There is a lot of pressure on manager Joachim Loew, which is surprising given that he was hailed as the saviour of German football only a few years back. However, repeated failures in major competitions has allowed some doubts to creep into the minds of German fans and media. Loew will be under enormous pressure to deliver the 2014 World Cup to Germany.

He has said that he is already looking forward to the World Cup after the Confederations cup, which is like a precursor to the World Cup, is coming to an end. Germany have not taken part in this competition, but they have seen the likes of Spain and Italy struggle. This will have certainly given them a lot of hope, as these two teams have been one of the strongest from Europe. Germany, on the other hand, will have reasons to be concerned about Brazil and Argentina, who have been coming to form at just the right stage.

Even though there were dangers of the Confederations cup being halted, Loew is confident that the World Cup will be held in a successful manner.

“My initial impression is very positive. The people are very friendly and incredibly fanatical about football. I think it will be a memorable World Cup next year. I am not concerned about the security situation, I am sure it will be very secure,” said the 53-year-old manager. He has been widely linked with a move to club football. Real Madrid are thought to be heavily interested in his services after losing their manager José Mourinho only recently.

SCOLARI BACKS KIDS

Brazilian national team manager Luiz Felipe Scolari has said that he wants to see the quality of the young players he has at its disposal, which led to the call-up of several players under the age of 20 for the recent friendly match against Bolivia. Brazil managed to win this encounter 4-0, thus marking the first victory for Scolari since returning as the Brazil manager a few months ago. It has been a tough few months for the former Chelsea manager, as he has seen his team lose against England and only draw against Italy and Russia.

Santos striker Neymar has been heavily criticised by various section of the media after his poor performances in these three matches. Neymar was largely anonymous in these three matches, but he returned back to his best by scoring two goals against Bolivia. Scolari has also said that one of the reasons behind the call-up of several young players is the fact that he did not want the Brazilian clubs to be affected. The domestic campaign for the league clubs went on as usual despite the international break. Calling up several players from the clubs like Corinthians and Santos would be harmful to them.

Hence, Scolari predominantly called up youngsters for this match.

“We had difficulties selecting the squad, as we couldn’t harm the Brazilian teams. Only Corinthians released a bigger amount of players (four). We included the younger players so that they have an opportunity, travel and know the atmosphere. They will adapt, get used to their teammates. If the situation allows it, I’ll have them play, so the under 20 manager Gallo and I can see how they will react. I can use Jean as a fullback, which is something I couldn’t do under other circumstances,” said Scolari after the 4-0 victory.

LAMPARD WANTS TO PLAY

The England midfielder Frank Lampard has stated that he feels that he will be able to play in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The 34-year-old is coming to the end of his career, which has seen him represent the England national team in several major tournaments over the years. However, he is out of contract with his club team Chelsea. There has been interest from several clubs across Europe for his services, while it is rumoured that the MLS club LA Galaxy currently lead the chase for his signature. After the recent 2-1 win over Brazil in a friendly match, the England manager Roy Hodgson suggested that Lampard needs to play somewhere close to England in order to be regularly picked for the national team.

The midfielder will be 36 years of age by the time the World Cup kicks off in 2014. He is extremely close to reaching a landmark of 100 appearances for the national team. Lampard has acknowledged the fact that people tend to look things differently at older players. However, he feels that he will have a future with the England national team if he stays with Chelsea. After categorically stating that he will not be awarded a new contract, Chelsea are apparently interested in the possibility of keeping him beyond this season.

“Maybe the World Cup is within reach but I’m certainly not getting carried away. I know how football is and from squad to squad it can change, and when you get to the age of 34, 35 this summer, people do look upon things differently and fair enough. I’m very understanding of where I’m at in my career. It’s certainly a target for me and, yes, I will try to keep playing at a good enough level to get there,” said Lampard.
